Chapter Six

Friday, July 2nd, 1852

This has been a very long week, but I feel myself growing stronger every day. We have been traveling along the Green River since Tuesday, and it feels safer to be close to water again—despite my experience with almost drowning in the North Platte.

We have made good time this week, going from Three Crossings to the point where we will arrive at Fort Bridger by late Monday. The days are long, but thankfully, the new captains have kept up my pace, and we still travel twenty miles most days.

There was a sudden storm this afternoon, and we all stayed in our wagons, not wanting to risk being hit by the thunder or lightning. I have a feeling we won’t be able to travel tomorrow. If it was up to me, I would say we don’t travel tomorrow but we travel Sunday instead, but I know the feelings of the company in general by now, and I know they won’t move on the Sabbath.

I have managed to keep my temper since Sunday. I haven’t even felt the anger rising within me but once, and that was when Harvey complained that he needed a day off from driving because his arms were getting tired. Thankfully, I remembered what Katie had suggested, and I recited the fruits of the spirit, and to my surprise, they worked, and my anger went away quickly. I didn’t let Harvey shirk his job of driving for Mrs. Davies, though. He needs to learn to do a hard day of work when necessary.

I look forward to getting to Fort Bridger, where we may mail letters and, more importantly, trade for new supplies. We should be able to replenish our flour, sugar, and cornmeal, as well as bacon. There won’t be enough for everyone, but I know that I have the gold coins needed to purchase what my family needs, as well as purchasing what Katie’s family needs.

Katie has not yet agreed to marry me, but we will discuss our plans again on Monday evening. I hope she will agree. Every day my feelings for her grow. I feel for her like I should have felt for Patience when we married, but I never did. I believe Katie is the love of my life, and I will always treat her as such.
